Here's your weekend.

## 📍 WHAT'S HAPPENING THIS WEEKEND
**NJ Trout Season Opener — Saturday, April 11**
New Jersey's statewide trout season opens Saturday. In Sussex County, the three to know:
- **Paulins Kill** (Newton to Blairstown corridor) — stocked in early April by NJ Fish & Wildlife; the most accessible trout stream in central Sussex County
- **Flat Brook** (Delaware Water Gap NRA, Sandyston Township) — designated wild trout water; no stocking, but genuine wild brown and brook trout. Trophy section: catch-and-release only
- **Papakating Creek** (Wantage/Frankford area) — good early-season action, especially in the upper stretches
NJ fishing license (required for anglers 16+) and current stocking report at nj.gov/dep/fgw. License is $22.50/year for residents; available online or at most sporting goods shops.
**Franklin Mineral Museum — A good Sussex County detour**
The Franklin Mineral Museum (32 Evans St, Franklin) remains one of the county's more distinctive family stops. The reason to go is the mineral history and the dig-site energy around the old zinc-mining legacy. If you're looking for something local that isn't just another trail loop, this is a strong weekend option. Admission and details at franklinmineralmuseum.com.

## 🏗️ WHAT'S NEW
**Mountain Creek's warm-weather season is approaching**
Mountain Creek (200 Route 94, Vernon) is back in the conversation as warm-weather traffic starts to build. If biking or summer mountain activity is part of your Vernon routine, now is the time to look at passes, operating dates, and weekend plans before the crowds arrive.

## 📋 NEED TO KNOW
**Reminder: School Budget Vote — Tuesday, April 21**
New Jersey's April school election lands on Tuesday, April 21 in 2026, the third Tuesday of the month. Polls open 7 a.m., close 9 p.m. Find your polling location at njelectionresults.com (enter your address). Budget details for your district are on your district website. If your district has a ballot question this cycle, read the district summary before Tuesday.
This is a low-turnout election where small groups of engaged residents determine outcomes. If you own property in Sussex County, this vote directly affects your school tax levy. Five minutes. Worth it.
**NJ Fish & Wildlife Stocking Report — Weekly Update**
NJ Fish & Wildlife updates the stocking report weekly during trout season: nj.gov/dep/fgw/troutstocking.htm. Shows which streams were stocked, when, and with how many fish. If you're planning to fish the Paulins Kill or Flat Brook this weekend, bookmark this link.
**Weekend planning note**
If you're heading toward the Water Gap, check park conditions and any reservation or fee updates before you go. The Flatbrookville area and Dingmans Falls remain two of the better easy-access options if you want a scenic detour.

## ⭐ LOCAL SPOTLIGHT: Paulins Kill Watershed — The Stream That Shaped Sussex County
The Paulins Kill is 44 miles long, flowing from Paulins Pond in Wantage Township southeast through Newton and out to the Delaware River at Columbia, Warren County.
Most Sussex County residents who live near it know it mostly as "that stream near Route 206" — which is a shame, because the Paulins Kill has shaped more of Sussex County's history than almost any other geographic feature. The early iron furnaces that built Newton and Andover were sited on the Paulins Kill for water power. The Delaware, Lackawanna & Western Railroad followed its valley from the 19th century onward. The fishing villages that became Blairstown and Columbia grew from the Kill's lower reaches.
Today it's managed as a trout stream and watershed corridor. The Paulins Kill Land Trust (paulinskilllandtrust.org) has preserved over 1,400 acres of land in the watershed — farmland, forest, and riparian corridor. Their properties include public access points for fishing and hiking.
On Saturday, the trout season opens. If you're going to fish it, you're participating in a tradition that goes back to when the farms along those banks were feeding Newark.
